Now, in one of our previous newsletters, we talked about the reason accessories are important in interior design and how one can achieve a shining room by incorporating it. The selection and arrangement of accessories tells so much of a person’s story and taste. However, it also has to match the theme of the room as each piece of selected accessories must bring harmony, not chaos.

So, what should be added to achieve such goals? Every piece of accessories belongs in two categories; functional and decorative categories, or sometimes both. Functional means the accessories need to be useful—lamps provide light, and ashtrays collect ashes. Decorative is explanatory, however, when choosing this category keep in mind that a number is frequently more appealing if these pieces represent one’s interest. Here’s a few pieces of accessories you can consider adding to your home.

We believe that without hanging pictures or paintings on the wall will make your home quite empty. Depending on their interpretation and colour, landscapes or seascapes, they can be used in both formal and informal settings. Pictures should complement the colours and textures utilised in the room. If you are still unsure on how to place your pictures, here’s a little guideline: Prepare and arrange pictures in an orderly manner; Hang images between five or six feet off the ground, or eye-level; Only when a painting is huge and significant enough to maintain interest should it be hung alone; Make sure to pick a frame that complements the artwork that doesn’t seem out of place.

Clocks are considered as functional accessories. Although, throughout centuries we can see clocks can also be decorative pieces with all sorts of design. A fascinating clock could serve as both an accessory and a genuine point of curiosity. An antique, mahogany grandfather’s clock brings out the vintage and elegant vibes in a room (and not to mention it screams old money lux). Clocks that chime—or ones with novel designs and materials—including glass cubes or spheres, blend well with contemporary ornamentation. Modern clocks tend to be rather simple, while some classic clocks have hand-painted panels and complex cases that are extremely elaborate.

Everyone must have a collection that they would like to exhibit to the world. Whether it’s luxury toys, seashells or trophies, they can be interpreted as the proud owner’s collection. Hence, it is no brainer for the collectors to make their collection as the focal point in their home. Collections should be displayed in a substantial, well-organised way that enhances, rather than detracts from the aesthetic of the room. If the collection is naturally gorgeous, it may be the focal point of the space. Make sure the collection complements the room’s background in terms of colour and shape. Collections can be arranged in groups and displayed on shelves, tables, or walls.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Or on the floor. Whichever works. Mirrors can be considered as functional and decorative accessories, depending on the situation. If placed in the dressing room and bathroom, it is functional, but if found in other rooms such as the entrance hall, it is leaning more on the decorative side. More importantly, placing mirrors in any room will give an illusion of a spacious area. Nowadays, mirrors without frames are frequently used in contemporary decor. Typically, traditional designs have a frame made out of wood or metal with a distinctive pattern. Mirrors should be chosen with consideration for the furniture and wall space.

For people who like gardening, home decor such as plants could liven up the space. As long as they receive enough light and have a healthy habitat, plants and indoor trees can be placed practically anywhere in a house or apartment (but do keep in mind, excessive humidity makes plants grow wildly.) They can be used as room dividers or to cover a gap in a window. Based on their diversity, shape, and interest, plants should be chosen as accents. They ought to be put in eye-catching containers that blend in with the room’s colour design. Or even better, start your own Zen Garden by collecting bonsai and be one with nature whenever you are stressed out. Study shows using bonsai as a tool during therapy serves a purpose to distract while digging in deeper subconscious or even unconscious thoughts as the tree becomes the potential transitional space of hope.

Moreover, sculptures will make a great addition to your garden. Stones, wood, metal, ivory, pottery, plastic, or glass—in any diverse shapes and sizes—can be used to create sculptures. When selecting sculptures, one should seek for a decent design, ethical material use, and if applicable, quality in replication.

Moving on from the great outdoors, do you perhaps have rooms with high ceilings? Then, you might want to add a chandelier to it. More formal rooms usually require lamps with a certain kind of elegance, hence a chandelier. Although, there are many chandeliers with simple designs (yet still elegant) that can be hung in a casual family room to add a touch of luxury. They may be less unadorned, but the colours and textures have a richness that associate with formal treatments. The personalities of a room can be greatly influenced by the lighting choices made for it, so it is crucial to pick designs that highlight the character of the space.

In conclusion, it is necessary to follow current trends, but you need to be careful about the components you use and make sure they’re practical and impactful at all times. Do not mindlessly copy the most popular trend without taking your personal space into account. Follow this general rule, and watch your home come to life beautifully!
